When renting a villa in Puerto Vallarta or the surrounding area, it’s easy to gravitate towards the most well-worn tourist spots. However, if you’re willing to travel a little farther and explore, you’ll discover a collection of wonderful beach towns in the larger province of Jalisco, each with something unique to offer. At Agave Villas, we’ll help you find the perfect villa rental so you can experience them all!
Yelapa
Yelapa is a small fishing town only accessed by boat and obtaining transport from Puerto Vallarta is easy for visitors—just hop on one of the many water taxis available (called pangas). With its beautiful beach of the same name and tranquil tropical surroundings, it’s the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax on the beach with a cold cocktail. If you’re looking for natural views, you can also visit the Yelapa Waterfall, which is just a short hike away from town.
It’s also a great spot to indulge your adventurous side, with plenty of activities like parasailing, paragliding, snorkeling and diving, horseback riding, and hikes through the jungle.
Quimixto
Located along the southern coast of Banderas Bay, Quimixto is a secluded village of just 400 occupants, surrounded by its pristine beach. It’s a popular spot for surfing during the high season with its soft waves and lovely sand. The main beach also features the only year-round restaurant in the village, Los Cocos, which serves delectable local seafood and authentic Mexican cuisine along with fabulous craft cocktails. Also worth a visit is Mixto Beach Club, where you can stop for lunch, dinner, and drinks to admire the beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean.
Like Yelapa, Quimixto has a stunning waterfall that can be reached via a short walk along a river trail.
Boca de Tomatlan
Boca de Tomatlan is your destination for a taste of authentic Mexican culture. Discover lovely local plants and flowers with a visit to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens or explore vibrant sea life when you book a scuba diving trip. There are five restaurants on Boca’s beach, where you’ll enjoy fresh seafood and ice-cold drinks while taking in the gorgeous scenery all around you.
Boca is also a great takeoff point to visit other southern beaches (including Quimixto and Yelepa) and you can also begin a hike from there to the isolated beach of Las Animas.
Mayto
Nestled off the beaten path is Mayto, a tiny village right beside 15 kilometers of beautiful blond sand. Because of its remote location, Mayto features no restaurants or beach stalls, but what it lacks in amenities, it makes up for in pristine natural beauty. It’s the place to visit if you dream of a quiet day on the beach, away from the crowds and noise of the city. Relax and take in the fresh sea breeze and the sound of gentle waves as you unplug and allow yourself a much-needed break from modern life.
Mayto is also the best place to watch one of nature’s miracles as baby sea turtles return to the sea.
Mismaloya
Mismaloya is a small fishing village located just 9 miles down the Southern coast of Puerto Vallarta. It’s well known for its restaurants that serve delicious seafood Mexican dishes as well as its ecological marine reserve, Los Arcos National Park, a popular snorkeling and diving spot where you can swim alongside manta rays and sea turtles.
All beaches in Jalisco have their own unique charm, and Mismaloya beach is no exception. This cozy beach offers gorgeous views of the Sierra Madre Occidental hills, several restaurants, and remnants of an old movie set that made this beach famous.
